Oceanside Classical Concerts Society is pleased and proud to announce the winner for our mid-Island music scholarship. This scholarship, valued at $2500, is awarded to a grade twelve student who will be pursuing a post secondary music education this fall.
This years’ winner is Paige Kaps. Paige is a very gifted and hardworking vocalist who will be continuing her studies in vocal performance in the University of Toronto Bachelor of Music Program.
Paige is the kind of young person in our community that we can all be proud of. In addition to her vocal training, where she has earned her grade nine voice diploma with first class honours at the Royal Conservatory of Music, she has also earned her RCM grade eight piano and theory diplomas. She performed at the mid-island Regional Performance Arts Festival and was nominated for provincials as the mid-island classical voice representative before Covid-19 forced its cancellation. She attended the UBC summer vocal workshop twice giving her the opportunity to work with university level accompanists, coaches and teachers.
While Paige’s first love is classical music she has also performed in musical theatre productions at her high school. In addition she stepped in to be the vocal coach for a school production when the original vocal coach could no longer participate because of Covid-19.
Along with all of her other activities, she has still maintained a straight A average throughout her high school career.
Joe Straka, OCCS scholarship committee chair says “We see Paige as a diversely talented, dedicated and well rounded young person who truly deserves this award. Congratulations Paige!”
Oceanside Classical Concerts Series is grateful to have the opportunity to help the next generation of musicians to achieve their best. We look forward to awarding a scholarship to another deserving mid-Island music student next year.
