The OCCS Master Class Program provides a unique opportunity for music students to engage with and learn from nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians who are guest performers at our Society’s concerts. OCCS launched this exciting program in February, 2020, when the Foothills Brass Quintet conducted an open rehearsal and masterclass session, coordinated by OCCS Director Mary Leigh Warden.
Five musicians from Kwalikum Secondary School teamed up with the Foothills Brass Quintet for a two-hour intense learning experience that involved structure, subtle techniques and applications about the instruments and working as a harmonious unit. Each student paired up with one of the professionals and, throughout the session, received individual tutoring while having the opportunity to play alongside their mentor.
The next master class session will be held in April, 2021 and will be promoted on this website and through local schools and music instructors.
In addition to providing master classes for students, OCCS has a Scholarship Program that fulfills the second goal in our society Constitution – “… advance education by providing scholarships based on academic achievement to high school graduates and students enrolled in post-secondary music programs and seeking a music-related career.” For more information on the Scholarship Program, or to make a donation to the Scholarship Fund, please click on this link.
