Instrument Repair & Lending Program
The Musical Instrument Lending Program was established to assist children who need musical instruments for school or other musical programs. The instruments are loaned free of charge for as long as needed.
In 2024, The Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation awarded OCCS a multi-year grant of $14,500 for this program. The grant will help offset storage rental, instrument repair and refurbishing, and media advertising costs for three years.
We are also very grateful for two anonymous donations of $2,000, to the Hamber Foundation that kindly donated $2,000 for instrument repair and to the City of Parksville that provided a $500 Grant-in-Aid to the program.
The following local luthiers and instrument repair shops have stepped up to provide repairs and provide instrument evaluations for tax receipts.
- Rufus’ Island Guitar Shop
- Arbutus Music
- SJ Guitars and Luthiery Training (formerly Summit School of Guitar Building and Repair)
- High Note Musical Services
- Fine Tuning Nanaimo
To date over 250 instruments have been donated. All have been evaluated, 80% of them repaired, and 50 have been loaned to deserving Oceanside music students in 13 elementary and high schools. OCCS instrument inventory includes: flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitars, violins, cello, drum sets and keyboards. We also have a selection of one-off instruments like a euphonium, base clarinet, flugelhorn, bugle, French horn, pocket trumpet, piccolo trumpet, mandolin and baritone horn.
Local teachers identify children in need of instruments in their music programs and OCCS lends the instruments for as long as they are needed, at no cost to the child, parent or school.
Instrument Gathering Dust?
Check your cupboards and, if you have an old saxophone, viola, or even a tuba gathering dust in your closet, how about donating it to OCCS? Your gift will bring a smile to a child starting in a music program.
All instruments donated will be assessed and a tax receipt will be issued for those valued over $20.
